iPhone Apps For The Playful Arabist

Thought I’d share some of my favourite iPhone apps with you. They are all very useful, albeit for very different purposes. Here they are, in no particular order:

  • Hadeeth Pro – (موسوعة الحديث النبوي الشريف) – a nifty little app containing “the nine major Hadeeth collections […] in Arabic”, including Sahih al-Bukhari with cross referencing and Sahih Muslim. Provides easy access to the most prominent collections and is easy to search – a very tempting alternative to crouching over Wensinck’s Concordance trying to settle for the best word to look up. Comes at a price, but it is worth it.
  • Pocket Frogs – A cute and addictive pet frog breeding and collecting game! There’s not much more to it than that, but the frogs are so cute that you won’t grow sick of them easily. Also, you can connect with friends and other players online, send frogs as gifts etc etc. I mainly just play it to kill time on the underground.
  • Week – A small app that simply tells you what week it is. I never know what week it is, and it is far more efficient to consult an app than to call my elementary school teacher mother every time I wonder what week it is.
  • Bubble Free – So I like bubble wrap. Who doesn’t? There are several free apps like this – I’ve only tried this one because I’m lazy. (And how many bubble wrap games does one really need?)
  • Cat Physics – A fairly simple, but nifty little game. With felines.
  • World Countries – An educational app that gives you all kinds of useful facts and trivia about all the world’s countries. In addition to being handy, it also comes with a load of highly entertaining and challenging quizzes! There is a free version, but it comes with less stuff of course.

As for Arabic language and culture apps, I have yet to test many of them. I’ll try to do so progressively over Christmas and come back to them later.

Note that nobody is paying me to recommend these apps. Anyone who wants to do so is welcome to contact me. I won’t be holding my breath.
